Day
Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
Going from Cusco by bus to Ollantaytambo train station (2791 m), the journey takes about 1 hour 30 min. From Ollantaytambo the train goes through the Urubamba Valley and then through Urubamba Canyon, where the vegetation is lush: one is located himself in a subtropical cloud forest.
Disembark at km 104 (2170 m) where the trek begins, the trail goes uphill always on the mountainside, you will see orchids, cascades, birds, maybe hummingbirds and butterflies and also views of Urubamba Canyon and its steep mountainsides with a lot vegetation. After this ascent you reach Wiñay Huayna (2650 m), one of the most beautiful Inca sites: from here the path is relatively flat 45 minutes and then steep again to Inti Punku (2720 m), highest point of the trek, the place from which Machu Picchu is seen from afar for the first time.
From here the path goes down about an hour and finally you reach Machu Picchu (2400 m), take some photos and go to the bus station, go down to Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu village (2040 m), have an overnight stay there.
